Great Stick for multiple applications with a modification August 27, 2010 D. Echevarria (Houston, TX USA) PROS:
Great for hiking, walking, checking the mail at night, personal defense, "talking stick" when camping, reach tool, etc...
The bumps along the shaft provide great grip for multiple holding options.
CONS:
I would not recommend for elderly due to smoothness of the top handle.
Needs a rubber tip for the bottom, $3 at CVS or Walgreens. Without the rubber tip it will slip on tile and concrete.
A MUST for hiking, can be used to defend yourself too August 19, 2010 BeachGoer (Honolulu, HI) In Hawaii there are numerous trails, beach parks, forested areas, and wilderness reserves. Most of which are accessible as public lands, others with permits. I used to use those Swiss Gear ultralite walking sticks, but now have switched to the Blackthorne. After several recent attacks and "close calls" by wild dogs, people on drugs, and marijuana growers on innocent hikers, and since Hawaii doesn't let its citizens or visitors legally defend themselves against felony assault, a stick (a BIG stick) is the only alternative. You can fend off those dogs, and (with some training) knock out an attacker, even if they are armed.
For "self defense" it's perfect, because it's a "WALKING STICK" and not an implement specifically designed to be a weapon, such as a gun, knife, billy club, or extendable baton. But seriously, it has durability, can inflict injury on an attacker, and could even save your life (ever come across a big bad Rottweiler in the dark, on a lonely trail miles from any road, in an area with no cell phone coverage? What about a secluded beach park with no one around, and all of a sudden a giant beast of a burly, scraggly, bearded, homeless-looking, CREEPY guy comes up over the trail and is intently watching you tan yourself on the beach, then crouches down...and STAYS THERE? ~*shudder*~ I HAVE!)
Even if it makes an potential attacker think twice, and hesitate...that's enough. "take the mind of your enemy". That guy backed off when I picked up the "STICK"...otherwise could I have become a statistic? After all, it's not about killing your attacker (i.e. not about a gun, knife, etc), but coming out alive. Doesn't hurt if you can punish the bejeevers out of your attacker, to make up for his/her parents' failure to be parents!
Needs a rubber crutch tip June 13, 2010 Sion ap Rhys (Arizona, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I finally got my synthetic Irish Blackthorn Walking Stick from Cold Steel. As I suspected, it's heavier and slightly more flexible than hardwood. The flexibility gives it a little shock absorbency which may be fine for a walking stick but not so good for smacking ne'er do wells. Hard wood can actually act somewhat like a tuning fork and transmit a lot of shock when striking bones.
I knew it was larger than a wooden stick but didn't realize how much larger. The head is almost too big for my hands. Someone with smaller hands would have a difficult time using this as a walking stick. The shaft is quite large in diameter which makes the stick even heavier. It feels more like a baseball bat than a walking stick.
The texture is good and the bumps that represent where the thorns would be on a natural blackthorn provide good grip without being sharp. The artificial wood head doesn't look bad at all.
The Blackthorn is plenty sturdy enough to use as a walking stick and it's also the correct length for me. A rubber crutch tip will protect the end and also keep it from slipping on hard floors. It will serve well enough to keep stray dogs at bay. I don't think it will replace my old wooden cane for walking, though. It was less than half the price of a natural blackthorn and the real thing is becoming less available and lower in quality when it can be found.
Not too shabby June 1, 2010 Hat Guy (Austin, Texas United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a nice stick, thick enough to offer support, flexible enough to have some spring. It does need a rubber tip as it is a bit slippery. The ball end fits nicely in my hand and the slanted cut away gives a good place for the fingertips to grip. Held this way the stick is very comfortable and light, pivoting easily and precisely when walking. Not as dressy as the city stick, and not so foppish as the slim stick...Works as a good all around traveler that doubles as protection in a pinch!
Not great June 1, 2010 William T. Evans (Akron, Ohio United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Rather crude. i thought for the price it would be a lot more realistic. It looks real phony...not worth the money.
